ScaleUp4Europe & Health Proc Europe Association joining forces to bring innovative procurement to the next level
Why
With healthcare undergoing the digital and cultural transformation, the need to procure innovative solutions becomes fundamentally important for healthcare organisations. To drive change and the transformation, we see the urgent need of accelerating the process to establish more valuable collaborations where the solution development is designed around healthcare needs with healthcare professionals involved driving the change.
One of the biggest challenges for healthcare buyers is to evaluate whether the multitude of product innovations are actually improvements or whether the industry just wants to push through higher prices. Unfortunately, the medical user is not a good advisor, as she/he usually does not look at the price. In the Innovation Lab, however, an exchange of experience can take place with other buyers. It is also possible to entrust one of the purchasers with the task of taking a deeper look at the product. His experience can then be shared in the group.
To react to this increasing demand, Health Proc Europe Association joins forces with ScaleUp4Europe acting as a gateway to innovative solutions and latest trends in the field of procurement. We are supporting the matchmaking of start-ups from the healthcare sector and beyond with procurers of healthcare organisations to develop and design proofs-of-concept and first prototypes as an answer to selected challenges and needs expressed by our community of procurers.
ScaleUp4Europe is a project funded by the Horizon 2020 programme of the European Union, supporting innovative companies at scaling and fostering their collaboration with corporates and public organisations. ScaleUp4Europe aims to connect different European ecosystems in Scaleup Labs with a focus on Health, Smart Region, Agile Manufacturing and AgTech. Based on the “living lab” concept, Scaleup Labs are supporting qualifying scaleups in achieving “Proof of Scalability” that includes, among others, technological, market, organisational and investor readiness. Adapting innovative solutions to specific customer needs and establishing successful scaleup-corporate relationships are central to the programme’s success. Within the framework of the project, we create a lasting and large regional scaleup support system by actively connecting four scaleup ecosystems across national borders.

Our aim: Be the outsourced innovation guide at your reach
Support the procurement professionals in defining their needs and matching with existing digital health and care solutions to accelerate the knowledge transfer, offer space for experimenting out of the operational scope, and guide the way to test and implement the best fit based on previously established healthcare challenges.
With our Health Proc Europe Innovation Space / Lab we are engaging all stakeholders from hospitals, start-ups, industry partners, patients, and health professionals to tackle unmet hospital needs.
Bridging healthcare procurement needs with proven solutions by bringing together expertise on digital health & care, procurement professionals to overcome unsolved challenges.
Additionally, as innovation procurement plays a crucial role we want to connect procurers with entrepreneurs and innovators to help shape products and solutions. This enables both sides to shape valuable offerings with an impact.
The approach
ScaleUp4Europe is one of four EU lighthouse projects to support innovative companies at scaling. Based in Austria, Pioneers establishes and manages the programme in the health sector.
In the health programme, 3-4 corporates or public organisations (challenge partners) participate with a challenge they currently face. In a problem framing workshop, the challenge and specific use case will be defined. Based on the use case and jointly defined scouting criteria, Pioneers will start the scouting process and select relevant later-stage start-ups and scaleups. Each challenge partner will choose the best four companies for the programme from a longlist of 20 top fits. Within the remote prototyping phase, the selected companies will work on a tailored solution for the use case in form of a functional prototype and will get supported by the respective challenge partner (insights, information and data needed, feedback). At the end of this phase, all participants will get together for the final 2-day boot camp (online or offline) where the solutions will be finetuned, more feedback will be received and integrated, and the final version will be showcased. Each challenge partner gets to nominate the best prototype for their use case. The goal after this programme is to kick-off a pilot project together with the start-ups/scaleups and implement the solution in the challenge partner’s environment.
In short, the programme consists of four phases which include the following:
- Understanding and defining the hospital challenge from a procurement perspective and define a specific use case as the starting point for the programme. (Sept 2020)
- Scouting & Matchmaking of existing solutions. (Oct-Nov 2020)
- Remote prototyping phase to co-develop tailored solutions with selected scaleups, culminating with the final event where the solutions are showcased. (Nov-Jan 2021)
- Adoption / Implementation process into your environments supported by Pioneers. (optional)
The participation at the programme is free of charge (excl. working time for the use case workshop and for the support of start-ups/scaleups during the programme).
